Low level view of Mikuma damaged by SBD Dauntless dive bombers during the Battle of Midway
Targeted by three waves of 81 SBD Dauntless dive bombers from USS Enterprise (CV-6) and USS Hornet (CV-8). Mikuma is hit by at least five bombs in the forecastle, bridge area and amidships and set afire and left a torpedo dangling from the after port tube and wreckage atop her number no 4 turret, sometimes incorrectly claimed to be the wreckage of a U.S. plane.
