Ship History
Built by Maizuru Naval Arsenal at Maizuru. Laid down November 8, 1939 as a Kagerō-class destroyer. Launched September 17, 1940 as Nowaki 野分 meaning "Autumn gale" or "Strong Autumn Wind" in Japanese. Commissioned April 28, 1941 in the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) under the command of Commander Koga Mogotaro, assigned to DesDiv 4 with ARASHI, Hagikaze, Maikaze, Desron 4, Second Fleet.

PARTIAL LIST

On June 4, 1942 during the Battle of Midway, after Akagi was damaged, at 11:46am Vice Admiral Chuichi Nagumo transferes his flag to Nowaki. On June 5, 1942 at 5:20am Japanese destroyers Arashio, Hagikaze, Maikaze and Nowaki fire torpedoes that scored two or three hits and scuttles Akagi.

PARTIAL HISTORY

On October 25, 1944 rescues 120 survivors of Chikuma.

Sinking History
On October 26, 1944 at 12:54am hit by gunfire and set on fire by Task Group 34.5 (TG 34.5) USS Vincennes (CL-64), USS Biloxi (CL-80) and USS Miami (CL-89) plus DesDiv 103 USS Miller (DD-535), USS Owen (DD-536) and USS Lewis Hancock (DD-675). At 1:49am dead in the water and finished off by a torpedo fired by USS Owen (DD-536) and sunk roughly 65 miles south-southeast of Legaspi on Luzon at Lat 13N Long 124-54E. The entire crew and those rescued from Chikuma are lost.
