Ship History
Built by Fujinagata Shipyards in Osaka. Laid down April 11, 1939 as Kagerō-class destroyer. Launched April 10, 1940 as Urakaze 浦風 meaning "Wind in the Sea" or "Wind in the Bay" in Japanese. Commissioned December 15, 1940 in the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN).

Wartime History

PARTIAL HISTORY

On January 14, 1943 departs Shortland on a troop transport "Tokyo Express" run bound for Guadalcanal. On January 15, 1943 targeted by SBDs escorted by F4F Wildcats and P-39 Airacobras and sustains minor damage from a near miss and the next day returns to Shortland. On January 16, 1943 departs Shortland to Rabaul for repairs then returns to Shortland ten days later.

PARTIAL HISTORY

Sinking History
On November 21, 1944 roughly 65 miles north-northwest of Keelung on Formosa USS Sealion (SS-315) fired a spread of three torpedoes aimed at Nagato but one hit Urakaze and sank at Lat 26°09′N Long 121°23′E and another hit battleship Kongo.
