IJN Peacetime Standard Type D Class Auxiliary Transport ![]() Dan Lantzy 1992 |
Ship History Built by Kawaminami Kogyo K.K. Zosensho shipyard at Koyagijima. Laid down October 12, 1940 as a 1,915 ton cargo ship, part of the Peacetime Standard Ship (D) Type Program. Launched May 11, 1944 as Kizugawa Maru (Kitsugawa Maru in some sources). Completed July 3, 1941 delivered to Toyo Kaiun K.K. and registered in Tokyo and requisitioned by the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) as an auxiliary transport. Wartime History On May 30, 1942 departs Tokyo Bay escorted by Hatakaze. PARTIAL HISTORY Sinking History On June 27, 1944 scuttled by gunfire in Apara Harbor off Guam. Shipwreck This wreck is upright in good condition near Tokai Maru. Clay Gobin adds: "Sits in 140'. Her mast is at 60' a good place for a safety stop. The gun sits at 100' and still has three or four boxes of ammunition on the deck. The damage is at 130', hit with six bombs. The dive is best done on Nitrox or it is a very quick dive. I dove her four or five times." Dan Lantzy adds: "The 4.7 inch deck gun on the Kitsugawa Maru (freighter) that was sunk in Apra harbor. It's a very deep dive and I could only spend five minutes at the deck gun. Once again, I was lucky with the silt situation. I was on a boat with about 40 other divers and I was the first to reach the gun. Minutes after the shot was taken, you couldn't see 6 inches in front of your face. One of interest is the crates of ready ammo still sitting next to the gun. They are live rounds and I'm amazed that no one has been stupid enough to try to bring them to the surface! The ship is 160 feet deep sitting upright. It's been blown in half by an aerial torpedo. The wreck sits right in the middle of the shipping channel and so, the only way to access it is by prior approval via the marine authority on Guam."
