Wartime History
Sunk off Shell Island (Ebwaj). Likely a picket bout or sub chaser
sunk between January 29 to February 1, 1944 by
U.S. Navy (USN) aircraft from Task Force 58 (TF-58) and surface ship gunfire fire.
Shipwreck
The
75 - 100' wreck is upright in 150' sandy bottom. Nicknamed "Phantom Maru" because of many unsuccessful attempts to located the vessel. The superstructure
is in good shape. The bow has been bashed in and flattened.
A machine gun is on the bow. The ship has a forwarded amidships hold,
and an aft engine configuration. The wheelhouse and crew's
quarters are located near the stern with a second machine gun. It has been stripped
of many brass artifacts and china.
