Ship History Built by Naval Construction & Armament Co in Barrow-in-Furness, United Kingdom at a cost of £28,500. Laid down during 1894 with yard number 229 as a cargo ship. Launched October 31, 1894. Completed December 1894. Wartime History During December 1941, captured by the Japanese and renamed Shinyō Maru and operated by a crew of civilian sailors. On September 4, 1944 at Zamboanga embarked 750 Alled Prisoners Of War (POWs) including 745 Americans into her three cargo holds then closed and secured the hatches and embarked Japanese Army guards. Sinking History On September 7, 1944 departs Zamboanga as the lead ship of Convoy C-076 with seven other ships, including two torpedo boats, two tankers, and four other medium and small cargo vessels. For roughly 14 hours, the convoy steamed without incident. When two to three miles off Lanboyan Point on the Zamboanga Peninsula on Mindanao, when USS Paddle (SS-263) spotted the convoy and fired a spread of four torpedoes with two hitting Shinyo Maru and sank at roughly Lat 08°11'N Long 122°40'E. Next, USS Paddle (SS-263) fires a spread of torpedoes that damages Tanker No. 2 Eiyo Maru that is run aground. Aboard, 668 were killed in the attack and sinking. Fates of the Crew Only three of the crew survived to be rescued. 83 Americans made it to the shore of Sindangan Bay and were aided by Filipino guerrillas under the command of Brigadier General Wendell Fertig, who radioed headquarters about the sinking. One September 8, 1944 one of the survivors died and the remaining survivors were eventually rescued by the submarine USS Narwhal aside from First Sergeant Joseph P. Coe Jr. who remained to join the guerrillas. Memorials The Shinyo Maru Hellship memorial dedicated 1998 in San Antonio, Texas. When dedicated, 17 survivors of the massacre and one member of USS Paddle's crew were in attendance. Hell Ship Memorial Shinyo Maru dedicated September 7, 2014 on the 70th anniversary of the sinking in Sindangan, Zamboanga Del Norte in the Philippines. References Also spelled Shinyo Maru.
