Secretary of the Navy James Forestal awards Navy and Marine Corps Medal to SC1c Elisandro Romero crew member aboard PT-193 "Bitchin Witch"
“For heroic conduct while attached to Motor Torpedo Boat 193, during operations against Japanese forces in the vicinity of Noemfoor, New Guinea, on June 25, 1944. Transferred to PT 331 when his craft ran aground, Romeo Romero unhesitatingly volunteered to aid in the rescue of two officers and two men who had remained aboard the blazing vessel to prepare for its destruction. Taking another rubber life raft through the heavy surf within one hundred yards of the flaming and violently exploding PT 193 and a burning enemy barge, he coolly and effectively carried out his hazardous mission. His initiative, courage and gallant concern for the welfare of others were in keeping with the highest traditions of the Unite States Naval Services.”
