Mine Sweepers Rejoin Fleet Here
"Ships recommissioned - Three Navy minesweepers were recommissioned yesterday at ceremonies held at the Navy Base here [Long Beach]. The vessels are shown above with their crews standing at attention as Capt. Wayn N. Gamet, USN, commander of the Long Beach Group, Pacific Reserve Fleet recommissioned the vessels. Rear Adm. Lay-ups End For 3 Vessels
"The Navy mine sweepers Competent, Devastator and Gladiator, laid up for several years, are back in commission here today and ready for assignment.
The three big steel-hulled sweepers were put in commission in ceremonies yesterday afternoon at the mooring of the Long Beach Group, Pacific Reserve Fleet, by Capt. Wayne N. Gamet, reserve group commander. Rear Adm. Thomas R. Cooley, deputy commander of the Pacific Reserve Fleet and deputy commander of the Western Sea Frontier, was principal speaker.
El Toro Marine Band played martial airs as the Completent was placed in command of Lt. Comdr. Edward A. Grant, the Devastator in command of Lt. James E. Murphy Jr., and the Gladiator in command of Lt. Joe R. Perry. Each of the ships carries 103 enlisted men. The Gladiaor was first commissioned in 1942 [sic 1944], the Completent in 1943 and the Devastator in 1944. All three vessels participated in the war in the Pacific. The Naval Shipyard recondition the Devastator and Gladiator, Craig Shipbuilding Co. the Competent. Several other mine sweepers of this class currently are being reconditioned."
