Ship History Built by Newport News Shipbuilding & Dry Dock Company in Newport News, Virginia. Launched January 26, 1940 as SS Esso Raleigh sponsored by Mrs. W. L. Inslee, wife of the late manager of the Traffic Division, Marine Department, Standard Oil of New Jersey. Afterwards, taken over by the Maritime Commission as MC Hull #12. On June 1, 1941 acquired by the U.S. Navy (USN) as a Cimarron class oiler named USS Guadalupe (AO-32) assigned to Commander Harry R. Thurber. For the next six weeks made several voyages transported oil from Texas to New Jersey. On August 16, 1941 docked at the Brooklyn Navy Yard and embarked six PT Boats: six PT Boats from Motor Torpedo Boat Squadron 3 (MTBS 3) including PT-31, PT-32, PT-33, PT-34, PT-35 and PT-41. On August 19, 1941 departs New York via the Panama Canal to the Pacific via Pearl Harbor where oil was discharged then onward to Manila Bay in the Philippines where the remaining oil and PT Boats were unloaded. Afterwards, returned via San Diego then the Panama Canal to Norfolk arriving November 13, 1941. In early December 1941 after the start of the Pacific War, steamed to Baltimore and was fitted with armament including 4" deck guns plus 40mm anti-aircraft guns and 20mm cannons. On February 16, 1942 departs Pearl Harbor with Task Force 17 (TF-17) under the command of Rear Admiral Frank Jack Fletcher including USS Yorktown (CV-2) heavy cruiser USS Louisville (CA-28) and USS Astoria (CA-34) with destroyers USS Sims (DD-409), USS Anderson (DD-411), USS Hammann (DD-412), USS Walke (DD-416) and oiler USS Guadalupe (AO-32) to operate off Canton Island.
