Ship History Built by Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in Bremerton, Washington. Laid down April 11, 1921 as a submarine tender. Launched April 12, 1926 as USS Holland (AS-3) sponsored by sponsored by Miss Elizabeth Saunders Chase, daughter of Admiral J. V. Chase. Commissioned June 1, 1921 in the U.S. Navy (USN). Stationed in San Diego as a submarine tender with tours to Panama. PARTIAL HISTORY On November 22, 1941 arrives Cavite Naval Base assigned to the Asiatic Fleet. Wartime History On December 8, 1941 at the start of the Pacific departs Manila Bay at night escaping to Balikpapan then to Surabaya on Java where joined by two destroyers that escort her to Darwin arriving January 2, 1942. PARTIAL HISTORY During January 1945 departs Pearl Harbor bound for Guam and embarks Vice Admiral Lockwood. By the close of hostilities, Holland had given 55 instances of refit to submarines, provided repair and service to 20 surface craft and completed various jobs on shore installations. On August 30, 1945 redesignated as a as an internal combustion engine repair ship ARG-18. By the end of the Pacific War, Holland had refit 55 submarines, repaired and serviced 20 surface craft and completed various other task. Postwar After the surrender of Japan, departs Guam via Buckner Bay on Okinawa, where she embarks Rear Admiral Allen B. Smith, Commander of Service Squadron 10 and his staff then proceeds to Tokyo Bay arriving September 29, 1945. On June 6, 1946 departs via Pearl Harbor back to the United States. On June 28, 1946 arrive San Diego and then to San Pedro for inactivation and overhaul at Terminal Island Navy Yard, then was towed to San Diego. On March 21, 1947 decommissioned and placed in the Pacific Reserve Fleet. On June 18, 1952 stricken from the Navy Register. Fate On October 3, 1953 sold to Bethlehem Steel Corporation and broken up for scrap. Awards For her World War II service, Holland earned two battle stars.
