During the Battle of Kula Gulf light cruisers USS Helena (CL-50) and USS Saint Louis (CL-49) firing at Japanese destroyers
This photograph was taken from the deck of USS Honolulu (CL-48) at approximately 2:00am, three minutes after the Americans opened fire and three minutes before USS Helena (CL-50) was hit by three torpedoes and sunk into Kula Gulf with the loss of 168 crew.
