Ship History Built by Cramp Shipbuilding Co. in Philadelphia. Laid down March 6, 1943 as Cleveland-class light cruiser. Launched August 27, 1944 as USS Little Rock (CL-92) named for the city of Little Rock sponsored by Mrs. Sam Wassell. Commissioned in the U.S. Navy (USN) under the command of Captain William E. Miller. PARTIAL HISTORY Postwar On May 23, 1957, recommissioned as Galveston-class guided missile cruiser. During the refit, her aft 6" gun turrets were removed and replaced with Talos SAM launchers. On June 2, 1960 recomissisioned as USS Little Rock (CLG-4) at Philadelphia with Capt. J. O. Phillips in command. . In 1975, redesignated USS Little Rock (CG-4). On June 5, 1975 participated in ceremonies reopening the Suez Canal then transited to the northern part from from Port Said to Ismaïlia and made a port visit to Alexandria. By 1976, all her Talos SAM systems were deactivated. Although the Navy had plans and funding to modernize the cruiser with new weapons, a survey revealed her propulsion system required extensive repairs. Instead, minimal repairs were made to allow her to return to Norfolk, Virgina. Further inspections and the age of the warship resulted in the decision not to make further investments. On November 22, 1976 stricken off charge and decommissioned. Display In late 1975, towed via via the Saint Lawrence Seaway to Buffalo, New York for donation to the Buffalo and Erie County Naval & Military Park as a memorial open for tours.
