B6N Tenzan (Jill) explodes after a direct hit from a 5" shell fired by USS Yorktown (CV-10) off Kwajalein Atoll
During Japanese retaliatory air strikes, this B6N Tenzan (Jill) was hit by a 5" shell causing the plane explode and disintegrate on fire from burning fuel. Visible in the sea are splashes from anti-aircraft fire and smoke from exploding shells. This photograph was taken by PhoMC A.N. Cooperman aboard USS Yorktown (CV-10). In the foreground at left is a cable aboard the carrier.
