USS Hornet (CV-8) under attack by Japanese planes during the Battle of the Santa Cruz Islands
At the center is a Japanese Type 99 / D3A Val dive bomber trailing smoke diving towards the carrier. Moments later the dive bomber hit the smoke stack and flight deck. Above the island is Type 97 / B5N Kate torpedo bomber after releasing its torpedo. Off the bow in the distance is another Type 99 / D3A Val dive bomber. In the center are splashes from fragments of an anti-aircraft shell that exploded over the sea between the aircraft carrier and the camera.
