USN April 1944
Ship History
Built by Seattle-Tacoma Shipbuilding Corporation in Tacoma, Washington. Laid down December 15, 1941 as Bogue-Class Escort Carrier with yard number 78. Launched May 7, 1942 as USS Prince William (ACV-31) named for Prince William Sound in Alaska. Commissioned April 9, 1943 in the U.S. Navy (USN) with Captain Herbert E. Regan in command. Afterwards, conducted a shakedown cruise off the west coast then reported to the Pacific Fleet Air Arm to ferry planes and personnel overseas. On July 15, 1943 redesignated as CVE-31.

Wartime History
For the remainder of 1943 and early 1944 loaded aircraft on the west coast then crossed the Pacific to make deliveries at New Caledonia, Canton, Samoa and Espiritu Santo then to San Diego and briefly conducted training and pilot qualification.

In the middle of April 1944 embarked planes including P-47D Thunderbolts across the Pacific to Townsville and arrived May 7, 1944 and the planes unloaded. Afterwards, returned across the Pacific to San Diego.

PARTIAL HISTORY

Postwar
At the end of World War II, assigned to Operation Magic Carpet and transported personnel and equipment back to the United States. On March 21, 1946 arrived at San Diego then was ordered to the Atlantic Reserve Fleet.

On April 8, 1946 departs San Diego via the Panama Canal arriving Norfolk fifteen days later. On August 29, 1946 decommissioned at Philadelphia and became part of the Atlantic Reserve Fleet. On June 12, 1955 reclassified as CVHE-31 and remained in the Atlantic Reserve Fleet. On March 1, 1959 struck from the Naval Register.

Fate
During March 1961 sold for scrap and towed to Japan then broken up.
