Bow of USS Tucker DD-374 damaged by a sea mine in Segond Channel jack-knifed and sinking off Malo Island
On August 2, 1942 three destroyers: USS Gamble (DM-15), USS Breese (DM-18) and USS Tracy (DM-19) laid a sea mines in Segond Channel. North of Efate Island and west of the Malekula Island the ships passed through the Bruat Channel and entered Segond Channel. The presence of the newly laid mine field was not conveyed to other American ship. At 9:45pm USS Tucker DD-374 struck an American sea mine which exploded and broke the destroyer's back. Aboard, the explosion killed three of the crew and three others were listed as missing.
