View of Kyūsyū Maru shipwreck near Bunani Point (Bunina) on the north coast of Guadalcanal
On October 15, 1942 Japanese transport Kyūsyū Maru was bombed by U.S. planes, set on fire and deliberately run aground and sunk. The entire bow was angled upward with anti-aircaft gun mounts visible. The port side of the bow has damage at the waterline and the forward king posts bent backward towards the stern with the upper half of the center funnel at the waterline and the tip of the stern mast above the surface. The view is on the beach towards the northwest overlooking coconut palm trees of Ruaniu Plantation on Bunani Point (Bunina). On the beach at the center is an abandoned Japanese boat and other debris.
