Sub History Ordered June 17, 1917. Launched December 23, 1922. Commissioned June 21, 1923 into the Koninklijke Marine (Royal Netherlands Navy) as Hr. Ms. K IX (also listed as Hr. Ms. K 9). Wartime History At the start of the Pacific War, this submarine was out of commission but was returned to service by March 1942 and escaped the Netherlands East Indies (NEI). On March 13, 1942 arrives Fremantle. During May 1942 the Dutch Navy decided to transfer the K IX to the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) for anti-submarine warfare training. After this offer was accepted, the K IX departed for Sydney for repairs. On May 12, 1942 arrived in Sydney Harbor and was awaiting repairs. On June 1, 1942 at 12:30am, HA-24 Type A Midget Submarine (M24) fired two torpedoes at USS Chicago (CA-29). Both missed, one ran aground without exploding. The other passed under Hr. Ms. K IX then detonated against the breakwater with the explosion damaged the submarine and lifted HMAS Kuttabul out of the water and sinking it and killing 21 sailors aboard. Afterwards, underwent extensive repairs. On July 25, 1942 decommissioned from the Royal Netherlands Navy. On June 22, 1943 commissioned in the Royal Australian Navy as HMAS K9. Afterwards, this submarine saw very little active service due to the poor mechanical state of the submarine and spent only a total of 31 days at sea. On January 22, 1944 badly damaged by a battery explosion. Due to a lack of spare parts, no repairs were undertaken. On March 31, 1944 decommissioned from the RAN. Afterwards, recommissioned with the Koninklijke Marine (Royal Netherlands Navy) as an oil lighter. Sinking History On June 8, 1945 while under tow bound for Merauke, washed ashore at Seal Rocks, NSW and was damaged and deemed too difficult to repair or recover and instead was scrapped.
