Sub History Built by Dalzavod in Vladivostok in the Soviet Union as a Leninec Class Submarine, Group 3 (including submarines L-13 to L-19). Laid down November 5, 1935 at Yard 202. Launched December 26, 1936. Commissioned November 6, 1938 in the Soviet Navy as L-15. Assigned to the Pacific Fleet at Vladivostok. Wartime History Assigned to the Pacific Fleet at Vladivostok. Along with L-16 departs Petropavlovsk bound for the Baltic Sea where they could operate against the Germans. The submarines planned to traveled from Petropavlovsk via Dutch Harbor, San Francisco, crossing the Panama Canal, to the Atlantic Ocean then via Halifax, Canada and the United Kingdom before proceeding to the Baltic Sea. On October 11, 1942 while steaming on the surface roughly 500 miles west of Seattle, the pair was spotted by Japanese submarine I-25 which mistook them for US Navy submarines and fired her single remaining torpedo. L-16 was hit and sank with the loss of the entire crew. Afterwards, L-15 continues alone. During May 1943 arrives at Greenock, Scotland. After repairs, joins the Northern Fleet.
