PARTIAL HISTORY

Fate
On June 19, 1942 at 12:43am the crew spotted waves breaking about 75' off her bow and ordered the submarine to reverse course but moments later ran aground on rocks off St. Makarius Point on Amchitka Island and waves pushed the submarine against the rocks and rolling her 10° to 15° while attempting to reverse but was held firmly by rocks as the crew dumped fuel to lighten the submarine but it became further grounded and her starboard screw struck a rock and was damaged. Attempting to move foward to clear the stern, the submarine only moved roughly 20' then became grounded again. At 1:15am transmitted six distress signal but only one was received by Dutch Harbor.

By 3:30am the waves increased and plans were begun to evacuate the majority of her crew and supplies using a rubber boat to ferry them ashore. By 11:00am the entire crew with the exception of the captain and five crew remained aboard the submarine and destroyed equipment and burned classifed materials. By 3:30pm plating was damaged and the torpedo room began flooding and three went ashore. At 3:50pm the last three radioman, the executive officer, and commanding officer abandoned the submarine.

Fates of the Crew
Ashore, the entire crew spent their first night ashore in an unsheltered cove. On June 20, 1942 the crew established a camp at Constantine Harbor on Amchitka Island using buildings and heating equipment there which had survived a Japanese bombing.
