Sub History Built by Mare Island Naval Shipyard on Mare Island. Laid down November 22, 1939 as a Tambor class submarine. Launched January 25, 1941 as USS Gudgeon (SS-211) sponsored by Mrs. Annie B. Pye, wife of Vice Admiral William S. Pye. Commissioned April 21, 1941 in the U.S. Navy (USN) under the command of Lieutenant Commander Allen R. Joyce. Afterwards, conducted a shakedown cruise off California. On August 28, 1941 departs via Seattle bound for Alaska. First War Patrol On December 11, 1941 departs Pearl Harbor under the command of Elton W. "Joe" Grenfell on her first war patrol and the first U.S. submarine war patrol of World War II with orders to conduct unrestricted submarine warfare off Japan operating off Kyushu. On December 31, 1941 first contact with Japanese. On January 27, 1942 roughly 240 miles west of Midway fired three torpedoes at Japanese submarine I-73 claiming it as damaged at roughly Lat 28°24'N Long 178°35'E but the submarine was actually sunk. Afterwards, returned to Pearl Harbor ending her first war patrol and was the first to patrol off Japan and first to sink a Japanese warship. PARTIAL HISTORY Sinking History On April 18, 1944 at 6:30am a Japanese plane from 901 Kōkūtai (901 Air Group) dropped two 250kg bombs sinking the submarine at roughly Lat 22° 52'N Long 143° 32'E.
