U.S. Navy (USN) frogmen aboard USS Burrfish (SS-312) prior to their special reconnaissance landing on Yap
(Left to right) Chief Howard “Red” Roeder, Emmet L. Carpenter, Bob Black, John MacMahon, and CPO John Ball. All five of the frogmen are wearing camouflage paint, holding KA-BAR knives and Mark 2 "Pineapple" hand grenades. This photograph was likely taken just prior to their departure on the special reconnaissance mission when three failed to return: Roeder, MacMahon and Black. All three were captured and became Prisoners Of War (POW) and were later executed and remain listed as Missing In Action (MIA).
