Sub History
Built by Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Kittery, Maine. Laid down October 14, 1943 as a Balao-class submarine. Launched February 5, 1943 as USS Segundo (SS-398) named for a Cavalles fish that lives in the Caribbean Sea sponsored by Mrs. John L. Sullivan,. Commissioned May 9, 1944 in the U.S. Navy (USN) under the command of Lt. Cmdr. James D. Fulp Jr. After fitting out and trails. On June 15 1943 arrives New London, CT and begins training. On June 26, 1944 departs via the Panama Canal via Pearl Harbor on July 25, 1944 and continues training until late August 1944.

First War Patrol
On August 21, 1944 departs on her first war patrol with USS Seahorse, and USS Whale to form a wolf pack. On September 3, 1944 refuels at Saipan and departs the next day to patrol the Philippine Sea off the Surigao Strait. On September 13, 1944 spotted by U.S. Navy (USN) planes that made a strafing run and crashed dived without damage. During the patrol, found no target and never fired any torpedoes. On October 21, 1944 ends the patrol at Majuro Atoll.

Second War Patrol
On November 16, 1944 departs on her second war patrol and patrol with USS Trepang, and USS Razorback to form a wolf pack in the Luzon Strait and South China Sea. On December 6, 1944 spots a Japanese convoy of seven cargo vessels and the three submarines make a night attack sinking all seven. On January 5, 1945 ends the patrol. Afterwards, to Guam for a refit by submarine tender USS Apollo (AS-25).

Third War Patrol
On February 1, 1945 departs on her third war patrol in the East China Sea with USS Razorback (SS-394) and USS Sea Cat (SS-399) to form a wolf pack. On March 6, 1945 attacks a small ship but all torpedoes missed. On March 10, 1944 attacked a medium sized ship at a distance of 1,000 yards with four torpedoes but all miss. On March 11, 1944 at night fires a spread of torpedoes at a Shori Maru with two hitting the stern and amidships and sinks in two minutes. On March 26, 1944 ends the patrol at Pearl Harbor. Afterwards, remains for a month.

Fourth War Patrol
Departs on her fourth war patrol to provide life guard duty in the East China Sea. On May 16, 1945 assigned to a her patrol station. On May 29, 1945 uses her deck gun to sink sinks seven two masted schooners of approximately 100 tons each. On May 31, 1945 sinks four masted ship with two torpedoes. On June 3, 1945 sinks a four masted ship with her deck gun. On June 9, 1945 sinks two more ships with her deck gun. On June 11, 1945 at night torpedoes and sinks Fukui Maru. Afterwards, ends the patrol at Midway.

Fifth War Patrol
On June 10, 1945 departs on her fifth war patrol bound for Sea of Okhotsk. until Japan surrendered. On August 24, 1945 ordered to Tokyo Bay. On August 29, 1945 on radar off the northeast coast of Honshu, spots Japanese submarine I-401 and using international signals orders her to halt. After considerable negotiation, the Japanese allow a prize crew aboard and the pair proceed together bound for Tokyo. On August 31, 1945 at 5:00am the U.S. flag was raised aboard I-401 and the pair enters Sagami Bay and is relieved by USS Gatling (DD-671).

Postwar
On September 3, 1945 departs Tokyo Bay via Pearl Harbor bound for the west coast. Assigned to SubRon 3 based in San Francisco. During 1946, conducts a three month cruise to Australia and China. During 1948 conducts a four month cruise off China.

Korean War
During July 1950 until September 1950 operates off Korea in support of United Nations (U.N.) forces.

Fate
On August 1, 1970 decommissioned and a week later struck from the Navy list. On August 8, 1970 sunk as a target by USS Salmon (SS-573) that fired a torpedo and hit the bow.

Awards
For her World War II service earned four battle stars. For her Korean War service earned one battle star.
