Background
The M3 Lee, officially Medium Tank, M3, was a U.S. Army medium tank produced during 1941–1942 and used by the U.S. Army, British, Commonwealth and Russia during World War II. The U.S. pattern turret was known as the M3 Lee named after Civil War Confederate General Robert E. Lee. The M3 with the British pattern turret were known as M3 Grant named after Civil War Union general Ulysses S. Grant.
Australian Army
A total of 777 surplus from British ordered M3 medium tanks including three variants: Lee (M3), Grant I (M3 and M3A2) and Grant II (M3A3 and M3A5) were shipped to Australia for use by the Australian Army, Australian Armoured Corps.

A total of 6,258 were built between August 1941–December 1942
