Tank History Delivered to the Imperial Japanese Army (IJA) as Type 97 Chi-Ha Medium Tank. Wartime History This tank was shipped as cargo to Rabaul or the New Britain area. One of two tanks sunk in Makada Harbor off Duke of York Island. Possibly, both were lost while loading or unloading. Alternately, both were deliberately dumped at the end of the Pacific War or after the surrender of Japan to dispose of them. Wreckage During the early 1990s, discovered by MV Manta. This tank is located nearest to shore at a depth of 4m upright on a sandy bottom. The main gun is missing, possibly removed before sinking. A second Type 97 Chi Ha Medium Tank (No. 2) is nearby and the remains of a landing barge. Contribute
