American Volunteer Group (AVG) "Flying Tigers"
Background
The American Volunteer Group (AVG) of the Republic of China Air Force (ROCAF) were nicknamed "Flying Tigers" under the command of Claire Lee Chennault with pilots recruited from the U.S. armed services that were paid salaries and a bounty of $500 for each enemy aircraft shot down. The AVG operated the P-40B Warhawks in Chinese markings divided into the 1st Squadron, 2nd Squadron and 3rd Squadron defending China during 1941 until disbanded on July 4, 1942. Afterwards, personnel from the AVG formed the cadre of the U.S. Army Air Force (USAAF) 10th Air Force (10th AF), 23rd Fighter Group (23rd FG).
