Background
The 6th Kempeitai was an Imperial Japanese Army (IJA) military police unit that detained and interrogated Allied Prisoners Of War (POW) at Rabaul. Also known as the 6th Field Kempeitai.

Wartime History
In early 1943, the 6th Kempeitai occupied a building that was a former Chinese Taylor shop at the corner of Casurine Street and Konbue Street in Rabaul. This location became known as the Rabaul Prisoner Compound (Rabaul POW Camp). The second floor of the building was used as the unit's living quarters and the lower levels converted into cells to detain Allied Prisoners Of War (POW).
