Background
On November 1, 1942 the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) redesignated air groups with three digit identifiers. The Takao Kōkūtai (Takao Air Group) with G4M1 Bettys was redesignated 753 Kōkūtai (753 Air Group) at Rabaul and returms to the Netherlands East Indies (NEI).

Wartime History
In March 1943 begins bombing raids against Darwin in the Northern Territory of Australia. In early July 1943 switched to night bombing raids.
