Background
On November 20, 1940 constituted as the 2nd Reconassiance Squadron (Heavy) in the U.S. Army Air Force (USAAF). On January 15, 1941 activated and attached to the 30th Bombardment Group (30th BG) at March Field operating the B-18 Bolo. On May 5, 1941 moves to New Orleans, Louisiana.
Wartime History
On December 25, 1941 moves to Muroc, California. On February 27, 1942 moves to Hammer Field Between April 10, 1942 until May 11, 1942 a detachment operaties in San Deigo On April 22, 1942 redesignated 392nd Bombardment Squadron (392nd BS) assigned to the 30th Bombardment Group (30th BG). On July 1, 1943 ceases flying anti-submarine missions off the west coast of the United States.
On July 15, 1942 returns to March Field. On September 28, 1943 begins a movement Hawaii. On October 20, 1943 arrives at Hickam Field and the same day moves to Barking Sands. On November 10, 1943 moves to Canton Airfield. On November 22, 1943 the squadron flies their first bombing mission in the Central Pacific.
On January 10, 1944 moves to Abemama. On March 17, 1944 moves to Kwajalein. On August 4, 1944 moves to Saipan. On March 18, 1945 moves to Kipapa Airfield on Oahu. On May 23, 1945 moves to Wheeler Field until the end of the Pacific War.
Postwar
On September 29, 1945 moves to Kahuku Airfield. On November 30, 1945 inactivated.
