Wartime History
The 26th Photographic Reconnaissance Squadron (26th PRS) was assigned to the U.S. Army Air Force (USAAF), 5th Air Force, 6th Photographic Reconnaissance Group (6th PRG). Also known as the 25th Photo Recon Squadron or 26th Photo Recon. Initially equipped with the F-5 Lightning, the photographic reconnaissance version of the P-38G Lightning and P-38L Lightning with cameras installed in the nose compartment instead of armament. The 26th Photo Recon Squadron was sent overseas to the South-West Pacific Area (SWPA).

On April 16, 1944 after landing F-5B Lightning 42-67350 pilot 1st Lt. Donald W. Christians collided with B-25D 41-30337 after landing at Saidor Airfield on New Guinea.

On July 10, 1945 lost F-5E Lightning 44-24485 pilot 2nd Lt. Henry R. Willis on a photographic reconnaissance mission bound for Kiangan on Luzon.
