Muschu Island
Trans-Muschu Road

There are no roads on the island, except for a single road that was built by the Japanese and spans the length of the island. There are no cars on Muschu, but the road is still clearly visible ever after nearly sixty years.

George described how the Japanese used the road to transport supplies into the hills to construct the Naval Gun positions, and the different areas where Japanese were camped, and during the end of the war many died of starvation, disease and malnutrition.

There are a few trucks along the road that were discarded by the Japanese when they experienced mechanical problems or became fouled in the terrain. The islands clearly remember that they did nothing to fix these trucks, and instead got new ones from the mainland because they were too busy to try and fix them. When asked why the islanders had not used them after the war, I was told because none know how to drive or fix trucks!

After surrender, the island was used as a holding point for Japanese POWs, ideal because it was flat and there were few places to hide.
