Location Maffin No. 1 villiage is located between Arare to the southeast and Sarmi to the northwest. Borders Maffin Bay and the Tirfoam River. Maffin No. 1 villiage is located to the southeast along the Tor River. Lone Tree Hill is located 1.8km to the west. Prewar and during World War II, located in Dutch New Guinea (DNG) in the Netherlands East Indies (NEI). Today located in Sarmi Regency of Papua Province in Indonesia. Wartime History During late April 1944, many of the Japanese troops from Hollandia fled westward to the Sarmi area, west of Maffin Bay where 11,000 battle-hardened Japanese Army 36th Division soldiers were dug in. Targeted by Allied planes between April 1944 to August 1944. American missions against Maffin April 29, 1944–August 16, 1944 The U.S. Army 33rd Infantry Division (Illinois National Guard) 123rd Infantry Regiment fought at Maffin Bay. The 1st Field Artillery participated in the amphibious assault at Maffin Bay. By the middle of July 1944, after the area was occupied by the U.S. Army, Maffin was developed into a staging area with an anchorage in Maffin Bay. The whole or parts of five different tank forces were staged from Maffin Bay bound for Biak, Noemfoor, the Vogelkop Peninsula, and the Philippines. Maffin Airfield (Maffin Drome) Built by the Japanese Army. Lone Tree Hill Feature located 1.8km west of Maffin jetty bordering Maffin Bay defended by the Japanese Army.
