Location Blanche Bay is located to the southeast of Rabaul, bordering Karavia Bay to the west and Simpson Harbor to the northwest. To the south borders Kokopo, Vunapope (Wunapope), Takubar, Raluana, Rapopo, Lesson Point and Rapopo Airfield. To the east is St. Georges Channel and New Ireland. Between 1884 until September 1914 part of Deutsch Neu Guinea (German New Guinea). Prewar and during the Pacific War part of the New Britain District in the Territory of New Guinea. Today located in East New Britain Province of Papua New Guinea (PNG). Prewar During November 1884, Imperial German Navy warship SMS Elizabeth entered Blanche Bay to claim New Britain for Germany. World War I History On September 14, 1914 Royal Australian Navy (RAN) E-Class Submarine HMAS AE1 departs Blanche Bay to patrol off Cape Gazelle and is presumed lost. World War II History Occupied by the Japanese during January 1942. The area was used by Japanese warships, transports and barges operating in the area. Used by the Japanese until the of the Pacific War. Lock Katrine Sunk around 1937 wreckage remains today Keifuku Maru Sunk January 5, 1943 A6M2 Model 21 Zero Ditched off off Malapau to the west of Kokopo.
