Emmick, 37472980 (MIA / KIA) Jefferson, SD MIA June 22, 1944 at 11:00am MACR 6148 Aircraft History Built by Douglas Aircraft Company. Constructors Number 20974. Delivered to the U.S. Army Air Force (USAAF) as A-20G-40-DO Havoc serial number 43-21327. Disassembled and shipped overseas to the South West Pacific Area (SWPA) and reassembled. Wartime History Assigned to the 5th Air Force (5th AF), 3rd Bombardment Group (3rd BG), 13th Bombardment Squadron (13th BS). No known nose art or nickname. When lost, engines R-2600-23 serial numbers 43-105496 and 43-105513. Armed with .50 caliber machine guns makers and serial numbers unknown. Mission History On June 22, 1944 took off from Hollandia Airfield (APO 565) piloted by 1st Lt. Walter A. Riordan with gunner Sgt Stanley D. Emmick on a strike mission against Noemfoor Island. The weather was ceiling and visibility unlimited (CAVU). This A-20 was flying in the no. 3 element led by A-20G pilot Captain Richard L. Walker flying in the no. 2 in a formation on the left with no. 3. A-20G Havoc pilot 1st Lt. Ansel L. Boiter on the right. Departing the target area, this A-20 appeared to be alright and was last seen over the Yapen Strait (Japen Strait) off Broe Bay on eastern Noemfoor Island. When this aircraft failed to return it was officially listed as Missing In Action (MIA). Search Afterwards, three U.S. Navy (USN) PBY Catalinas searched the area with nil sightings. Memorials Both crew members were officially declared dead on February 15 1946. Both earned the Air Medal and Purple Heart, posthumously.
