A6M2 Zero 5349 crash site on Melville Island
Visible is the engine cowling with the propeller broken off during the landing and engine dislodge from the mount. The cockpit canopy is open. The leading edge of the wing was damaged during the landing. Beyond is the tail with tail code 24 [BII-124]. The rear fuselage has ripples from stress caused by the landing. An inspection cover his hanging off the fuselage and the right machine gun cover is removed and pieces of the fuselage damaged by the landing with one of the machine gun slits bent upward. In the foreground is vegetation broken by the landing or cut down by Australian personnel.
