Aircraft History Built by Mitsubishi on May 30, 1942. At the factory, painted overall gray with a black cowling. Delivered to the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) as Type 0 / A6M2 Model 21 Zero manufacture number 5779. This aircraft was assigned a Houkoku Gou (Navy Patriotic Presentation Number). Donated by Rengou Shiki Gou, a company that manufactured molded paper (Shiki means molded paper like cardboard boxed, packing cases, paper cup or plate products). Assigned Houkoku Gou 550 (Patriotic Presentation Number 550) in black on both sides of the rear fuselage. Wartime History Assigned to the Tainan Kōkūtai (Tainan Air Group). Tail code V-171 painted in black. The rear fuselage had a red diagonal fuselage stripe behind the Hinomaru. This Zero was abandoned at Lae Airfield. Wreckage This Zero was abandoned at Lae Airfield. On September 16, 1943 the wreckage was examined by Allied Technical Intelligence Unit (ATIU) that noted the manufacture number 4698 and Houkoku Gou 550. Later, it was discarded into a dump area, pushed against the wreckage of a G4M1 Betty. Ultimate fate unknown, likely scrapped or otherwise disappeared.
