IJN ? Kōkūtai |
Aircraft History Built by Mitsubishi or Nakajima. At the factory, painted overall gray with a black cowling. Delivered to the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) as Type 0 Carrier Fighter / A6M2 Model 21 Zero manufacture number unknown. Wartime History Assigned to an unknown Kōkūtai (Air Group). No known markings or tail code. Mission History This Zero ditched into Kamimbo Bay (Tambea) near Cape Esperance on Guadalcanal. Wreckage Until the early 1970s, this Zero remained in situ at an unknown depth in Kamimbo Bay (Tambea). In the early 1970s, this Zero was recovered and moved ashore The wreckage including the fuselage and wings were left on the side of the road near the Tambea Beach Resort. Over the years, the wreckage was broken up. By 2003, only the engine and pieces of wreckage remained. Peter Flahavin reported in 1996: "This Zero was dragged out of Kamimbo Bay in the early 1970's, but the usual ownership dispute meant it was stripped and dumped across the road from the beach, nothing much left of it I am afraid." Justin Taylan reports in 2003: "During the 'Guadalcanal Tensions' the Tambea Beach resort was destroyed, and the remains of this Zero further dispersed. One of the wings was thrown in the drained swimming pool, and there were only a few small pieces of wreckage on the opposite side of the road. Probably, these remaining bits will be disposed of when the resort is rebuilt as they are unidentifiable, to all but those who carefully look.
