IJN ? Kōkūtai |
Aircraft History Built by Mitsubishi or Nakajima. Delivered to the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) as Type 0 Carrier Fighter / A6M2 Model 21 manufacture number unknown. Wartime History Assigned to an unknown Kōkūtai (Air Group) at Rabaul. This Zero was abandoned at an airfield in the Rabaul area, likely Vunakanau Airfield or Tobera Airfield. Likely, this aircraft was damaged on the ground then abandoned. Wreckage This Zero is displayed at Kokopo War Museum (Kokopo Museum) outdoors behind the museum buildings. The front half and wings are from this A6M2 Model 21 Zero. The fuselage and tail section are from A6M3 Zero 3390. Justin Taylan adds: "Although the aircraft looks gutted, it is in remarkable condition. All the fittings and framework are present, even the wing 20mm cannons."
