Aircraft History Built by Mitsubishi likely during the middle of 1942. At the factory, painted overall gray with a black cowling. Delivered to the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) as Type 0 / A6M2 Model 21 Zero manufacture number ??41 (first two digits unknown). Likely, manufacture number 2641. This aircraft was assigned a Houkoku Gou (Navy Patriotic Presentation Number). Donated by Mr. Yoshihide Shibuya. Assigned Houkoku Gou 529 (Patriotic Presentation Number 529) in black on both sides of the rear fuselage. Wartime History Assigned to the Tainan Kōkūtai (Tainan Air Group). Tail code V-1?? (last two digits unknown). This aircraft had a double red diagonal stripes on the rear fuselage indicating assignment to Hikotaicho (the leader of a Hikotai, usually a pilot with the rank of Lieutenant or Lieutenant Commander). During late 1942 or early 1943, this Zero crashed in New Guinea. Possibly, an A6M2 Zero that took off from Buna Airfield on a mission against Milne Bay and went missing August 27, 1942 Wreckage The crash site of this Zero remained in situ in the jungle of Papua New Guinea. On the lower portion of the right stabilizer is manufacture number ??41. The tail stencil: reads: 'MITSU BISHI ??41 GO'. The first two Kanji are the the symbols for Mitsubishi, the manufacture number ??41 and "GO" for number. The crash site remained in situ until at least the 1990s.
