Aircraft History Built by Taylorcraft Aeroplanes Limited in the United Kingdom as Auster Mark III. Constructors Number 324. Fuselage code TAY5597. Assigned Royal Air Force (RAF) serial number MZ212. Disassembled and loaded as cargo aboard a ship departing on December 27, 1944 from Glasgow, Scotland bound for Australia arriving at Sydney on February 17, 1945. Wartime History On February 17, 1945 delivered to the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF). On February 20, 1945 assigned to 2 Air Depot (2 AD). On February 21, 1945 assigned serial number A11-25. On April 21, 1945 assigned to 17 Air Observation Post Flight (16 AOP) to replace Auster A11-8. Mission History On August 18, 1945 took off on a mission and crashed on Bougainville. This Auster either crashed into a river due to a structural failure or crashed into the jungle near the Torokina River after it would not respond to controls after experiencing a severe downdraft. The crash was not fatal. Wreckage The crash site was deemed on be inaccessible on August 27, 1945 and was officially written off.
