AWM Caption: "New Guinea. Despite both elevators being badly damaged by ack ack fire and shrapnel having torn the tyres of both landing wheels to the canvas, a Flying Fortress was flown 400 miles to its base in New Guinea, and landed safely. The pilot was 1st Lieut. James C. Dioffenderfer [sic Dieffenderfer] of Logan, Virginia. The fortress was damaged in attacking a convoy. This picture shows the damaged elevators."
