The column of smoke at the center is from Sasako Maru hit by a bomb and caught fire and deliberately run aground with other Japanese transports visible nearby. This photograph was taken on October 15, 1942 before 11:50am when the B-17s commenced their bomb runs against the remaining transport and scored a bomb hit on Azumasan Maru causing fires and is run aground. Later in the afternoon around 1:30pm other U.S. planes bomb Kyushu Maru that was also set on fire and run aground.
