Wartime History
During May 1942 Japanese forces occupied Guadalcanal. During the Battle of Guadalcanal, the Japanese used this area as a Imperial Japanese Army (IJA) supply area to land reinforcements. On October 14, 1942 at midnight, Japanese ships from the high speed convoy (first assault convoy) "Tokyo Express" run began unloading in the vicinity until dawn when spotted by U.S. planes and targeted by bombing and strafing missions that resulted in three transports including Sasako Maru, Azumasan Maru and Kyūsyū Maru were hit, set on fire then deliberately beached and sunk.

On February 7, 1943 the U.S. Army 25th Division, 161st Infantry reached Bunani Point (Bunina) without meeting resistance. Afterwards, the Bunani Point was used as a training area for amphibious landings by ships and landing craft. In May 1944 by USS Centaurus (AKA-17) conducted a training landing at Bunani Point.
