Wartime History
During the World War II, the Solomon Islands had tremendous historical significance as the site of the first U.S. amphibious operation of the Pacific War and subsequent campaigns. On August 7, 1942 an Allied task force of warships and transports landed U.S. Marine Corps (USMC) Marine Raiders and 1st Marine Division on Tulagi and Guadalcanal. Afterwards, fierce land, sea and air battles were waged in the area including Iron Bottom Sound. After the Japanese withdrawal from Guadalcanal in early February 1943, American forces advanced into the Central Solomons and Bougainville. The Solomons was both damaged and enhanced by the Pacific War. The positives included many roads, airfields and infrastructure built by the Allies.

Postwar
The United Kingdom began transitioning the Solomon Island towards independence by establishing a local council system, elections and in 1974 adopted a constitution. On July 7, 1978 the Solomon Islands became an independent nation.
