Location Lat 9° 25' 60S Long 159° 56' 60E Honiara is located on the north coast of Guadalcanal. To the north is Point Cruz and beyond is Iron Bottom Sound. To the east is Lunga Point and Honiara Airport (Henderson Field). Prewar and during the Pacific War part of the British Solomon Islands Protectorate (BSIP). Today located in the Solomon Islands. During July 1983 Honiara was designted the Capital Territory surrounded by Guadalcanal Province. Postwar At the end of World War II, the British Government utilized the American infrastructure on the coast of Guadalcanal and established Honiara the postwar center of the colonial administration, instead of Tulagi. Postwar On July 7, 1978 the Solomon Islands became an independent nation with Honiara as the provincial capital of Guadalcanal Province and the national capital of the Solomon Islands. During July 1983, the 22 km square area of Honiara area was designated a capital territory and is no longer considered part of Guadalcanal Province. Today Honiara includes Point Cruz, Matanikau and Chinatown. To the west is White River and Tanaghai. The Kukum Highway (Kukum Road) divides the city from east to west.
