| Location The Republic of Vanuatu is an island chain located in the South Pacific Ocean. Prewar and during the Pacific War known as New Hebrides (New Hebrides Condominium) until independence on July 30, 1980 when officially renamed the Republic of Vanuatu. Also known as simply Vanuatu. The national capital is Port Vila (Vila) and borders the Solomon Islands to the northwest. Wartime History During the Pacific War, the New Hebrides was a major staging area early in the war for the Guadalcanal campaign. On March 18, 1942 the first American personnel arrive and rapidly develop the islands into a a major base area with airfields, anchorage and staging area.
