Location The Coral Sea is a body of water in the South Pacific. To the west is the Great Barrier Reef and east coast of Queensland in Australia. To the north is the Solomon Sea and the Solomon Islands. To the northwest is Papua New Guinea (PNG) and to the east is Vanuatu (New Hebrides) and New Caledonia. To the south is the Tasman Sea. Wartime History During the Pacific War, the Coral Sea was an important shipping route for Allied vessels crossing the Pacific from the United States to Australia. Also, American aircraft being flown across the Pacific traversed the Coral Sea before arriving in eastern Australia.
