Aircraft History Built by Consolidated in San Diego. Constructors Number 697. Delivered to the U.S. Army Air Force (USAAF) as B-24D-10-CO Liberator serial number 41-23920. Ferried overseas via Hickam Field then across the Pacific to Australia. Wartime History Assigned to the 5th Air Force (5th AF), 90th Bombardment Group (90th BG) "Jolly Rogers", 321st Bombardment Squadron (321st BS) "Bombs Away". Nicknamed "Liberty Belle" in capital letters with a black outline and the nose art of a nude woman wearing a crown and holding a torch in her raised right hand and a shawl between both hands on both sides of the nose. A scoreboard was below the cockpit window with bomb markings indicating missions flown and silhouettes of aircraft claimed as shot down by gunners. During 1943 operated from 5 Mile (Wards Drome) near Port Moresby flying bombing missions over New Guinea. Later, "3902" (last four digits of the serial number) was painted in white on the right side of the nose. Ultimate fate unknown likely scrapped or otherwise disappeared.
