Delivered to the U.S. Army Air Force (USAAF) as B-24J-145-CO Liberator serial number 42-41197. Ferried overseas via Hickam Field to the South Pacific. Wartime History Assigned to the 5th Air Force (5th AF), 43rd Bombardment Group (43rd BG), 65th Bombardment Squadron (65th BS) "The Lucky Dicers". No known nickname or nose art. When lost, Missing Air Crew Report 16164 (MACR 16164) does not list the engine or weapon makers or serial numbers. Mission History On March 29, 1944 took off from Nadzab Airfield on a flight bound for Saidor Airfield to stage for a bombing mission against Hollandia. During the first leg of the flight, this bomber suffered an engine failure and crashed in the sea off Dregerhaffen Harbor (Finschafen Harbor) off Finschafen. During the crash, six of the crew went Missing In Action (MIA) with five survivors who were rescued. Memorials The entire crew was officially declared dead the day of the mission. All are memorialized at Manila American Cemetery on the tablets of the missing. Hogan earned the Air Medal and Purple Heart, posthumously. Diussa earned the Air Medal and Purple Heart, posthumously. Stevens earned the Purple Heart, posthumously. Miller earned the Purple Heart, posthumously. Aguirre earned the Air Medal and Purple Heart, posthumously. McCarty earned the Purple Heart, posthumously. Hugeback died July 5, 1986 at age 64. He is buried at Carrollton IOOF Cemetery in Carrollton, KY.
