Aircraft History Built by Consolidated. Constructors Number 2385. Delivered to the U.S. Army Air Force (USAAF) as B-24D-160-CO Liberator serial number 42-72815. Ferried overseas via Hickam Field then across the Pacific to Australia. Wartime History Assigned to the 5th Air Force (5th AF), 90th Bombardment Group (90th BG), 400th Bombardment Squadron (400th BS). Nicknamed "Sky Witch". This B-24 was equipped for long-range reconnaissance missions with four extra 400 gallon bomb bay fuel tanks, plus two 160 gallon fuel tanks in the command deck. On November 7, 1944 took off from Pitu Airfield on Morotai on a mission to search for the Japanese Fleet in Brunei Bay off Borneo. Over the target, fought a 40 minute battle with at least 9 Zeros, claiming at least four, then flew another 1,000 miles back to base and landed safely but was so badly damaged it was written off.
